Clean Drinking Water to Thousands of People

Prevention is always cheaper and better than treatment! This is exemplified by the effect of contaminated drinking water.

The community of Sarurpur where CHILD Foundation’s hospital is located lacked clean drinking water. Water-borne diseases, particularly among enfants and children, were common. From July to September, the monsoon season, the influx of patients used to overwhelm the medical staff at the hospital. This is now under control… thanks largely to the installation of bio-sand filters that are providing clean drinking water to the community.

The project was planned in 2015 in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Calgary Centennial and was supported by several local clubs, The Rotary Foundation and the Government of Alberta through a matching CIP grant.

Once completed in 2019, the project will provide about 1,100 bio-sand filters, one each to a family, using a design developed by Center for Affordable Water and Sanitation Technologies. More information about the technology is available at CAWST.org.

This project is the result of several years of collaborative efforts between CHILD Foundation, CAWST and the Rotary organization. Implementation of the project got delayed due to economic disruption caused by demonetization of large currency notes in India. However the project is back on track and will be completed in 2019. Since the opening of the hospital, this is one of the most significant initiatives undertaken in the community.
